Putting Students First

This area will be looking at Qld Road Rules in some detail to help you be safer on the road and win arguments.

Each week on Facebook we will be adding a competition question, the following week the answer will be posted and added to this section.

This section is built using the following documents whch are part of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995:

  • Transport Operations (Road Use Management-Road Rules) Regulation 2009 (Current as at 31 March 2017).
  • Transport Operations (Road Use Management-Driver Licensing) Regulation 2010 (Current as at 24 February 2017).

Bicycles

There have been some changes to the road rules regarding bicycles and how they behave on the road. More importantly rules have been changed regarding how car and other vehicles behave around bicycles.

In this article we discuss these rules and common objections.

Congestion/Zipper Merge

This is a difficult one to understand, people judge, it's a fact of life, but when people judge those who are doing the right thing simply because they think they are doing it right you often have people getting upset unnecessarily.

Keep Left

There are times when you are allowed to use which ever lane you want and times where you are restricted to use specific lanes. Some of them are obvious, like when there is a left or right turn arrow in the lane, but when should you "Keep Left"?

In this article we discuss when the "Keep Left" rule applies and what the exceptions are.

Shoes

A question we are often asked: "Am I allowed to do my test barefoot?"

The answer is a little more complicated than a simple "Yes" or "No".

In this article we answer the question and discuss other things to consider including what footwear is best and what to avoid.

Legal U-Turns

You would have learned how to do a U-Turn during your Learner process (if not go here How to do a U-Turn) but were you taught the rules about when/where you can can't do a U-Turn?

In this article we will be looking at the regulations that decide when/where you can and can't perform this manoeuvre?

Right of Way - Road Markings

Road Markings can tell you a lot about the road you are on, including what the requirements are at any given intersection, especially who has the right of way.

In this article we will be looking at the difference between three different intersections and how the road markings can change the right of way.

Median Strip Turning

You will find a lot of intersections with a Median Strip down the centre of the road. Rules around these things are sparse and unhelpful. The best I could find with some serious research simply stated that the first car into the Median Strip has the right of way. So how should you use these to turn and what position should you wait in?

In this article we will be looking at the different options and the one that we recommend and the reasons behind that recommendation. What are your thoughts?

Curved T-Intersection

The most controversial competition questions I do seem to be the ones that don't fit the normal everyday expectations. The first example of these was the curved T-Intersection question that I added.

So lets have a look at this intersection and see how it works and what we should be looking for when things are different from the norm.
