Federal Government to fund lessons for learner drivers

The federal government is in the prossess of developing a program along side keys2drive that will give learner drivers and their parent/mentor a free driving lesson with an accredited driving instructor.
The Federal Government will fund 200,000 free driving lessons for learner drivers in a bid to reduce the road toll.

Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese said the Government would spend $17 million over the next five years on the keys2drive program, which will be launched and fine-tuned in Tasmania before being rolled out nationally next year.

The program will provide learner drivers with a free professional driving lesson from an accredited instructor.

It will also support parents and mentors with instructional material and practical guidance on how to provide effective supervision and training to a learner driver.

Mr Albanese said the program was a practical way of equipping young people with the skills they needed to drive safely.

"Nearly a third of people killed on Australian roads are aged 16 to 25, yet they represent only 15 per cent of the population,'' he said in a statement.

"In fact, young people go from being one of the safest drivers on the road when on their L plates to being one of the most likely to have a car crash the moment they get their P plates.

"We must, and will, do more to prevent these tragedies.''
